Anyone on leave when the announcement was made, was eligible for the extended benefit, and those using or looking to utilize this policy are few people in the country with this kind of benefit. With the exception of Netflix, not many other companies offer workers (of all genders) a chance to take a full year off to be with their newborn babies.Thats largely because the United States is the only industrialized country that does not offer all citizens federally mandated paid family leave. Just 14% of civilian workers had access to paid leave last year, mostly thanks to state laws and progressive employers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Among 41 developed coun tries, the United States is the only one that does not have a federal law requiring paid leave for new parents, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reported. The law does allow workers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave without risking losing their jobs after having a baby, but most developed countries offer an average of about one year of paid leave, according to Business Insider.In the absence of a federally mandated paid leave policy, some states and cities have implemented their own, while private and public companies also created their own policies. In fact, Fast Company has covered the rat race for organizations to one-up each other with extended benefits ranging from 12 weeks to six months, in an effort to retain and attract talent. But the Gates Foundation has raised the bar with a full paid year off for new parents.And, with more than two years of experience with the 52-week parental leave (and 222 new parents, 66% of whom are women and 34% of whom are men, participating out of a staff of 1,546), the Foundations chief human resources officer Steven Rice has said the policy cpistee was a wise move. We now have a website that shows all the opportunities popping up through the organization, and we now have people applying for these backfill positions as stretch opportunities for them to grow in their career and experiment and experience new parts of the organization that they wouldnt have experienced previously.Supporting fathers to take leave, tooMen who are in leadership roles feel a different type of stress or pressure on needing to want to take some time off but get back into the job. They probably hang onto the work much more strongly than a man in an individual contributor role. So were working on how can they actually delegate work and responsibilities, still feel supported, and feel that their re-entry would be managed.Reintroducing those whove taken leaveLike any dynamic organization, a year is a long time in terms of how many changes or shifts happen. So weve actually had managers do a new hire orientation to bring the individual back in. We werent anticipating the depth of how much that work was going to be for the manager. But a new case in Germany goes beyond someone stealing a condiment from the office fridge. According to ABC News, one employee is suspected of killing 21 of his colleagues by poisoning their lunches.Coworker suspected of poisoning colleagueâs lunchesThe suspicion began when a 26-year-old employee noticed an unknown white powder on his sandwich and reported it to his manager. The company, a metal fitting firm, then installed a CCTV camera to monitor who was sprinkling powder on employeeâs lunches. The camera allegedly revealed that a 56-year-old employee had been opening lunch boxes and dusting powder on them, police said. Lab results showed that the powder contained lead acetate, a toxin that could cause severe organ damage.âIn the beginning, we thought it was a misconceived prank between co-workers, and not a murder attempt,â firm manager Tilo Blechinger to ld DPA, a German news agency.What would motivate someone to harm their coworkers like this? That is still being investigated. Identified only as âKlaus Oâ by police and described as âconspicuously inconspicuousâ by his manager, the suspect had toxic chemicals like mercury, quicksilver, lead and cadmium in his home after police searched his apartment. The suspect was a longtime employee who had been at the company for 38 years, putting deaths that had occurred during those decades in a new sinister light. In total, police said they were looking into 21 cases of employees dying under suspicious circumstance since 2000.This is not the first time that an employee has used the seemingly innocent vessel of office food to act out their revenge on coworkers. Last month, a woman baked laxative-laced brownies for a coworkerâs farewell party. However strict and secure your office environment is, every coworker needs to engage in the vulnerable act of eating food. Eating is where we p ut our guard down and trust that the food we put in our mouths is the food we packed for ourselves that morning. But sometimes. as these cases remind us, that trust can be fatally misplaced.

After all, you are coming into this new industry with no experience, competing against those who spent their careers in it. With the changing times and technology in todayâs job market, it has become important for people to keep learning new skills, regardless of age or experience level. If you look at a dream job description and read something that makes you think, âI do not know how to do thatâ, you are discovering that you have something to learn. Before thinking everything in your old career was a waste of time, take a full inventory of everything you know how to do. Here are some examples of how to take inventory using these steps and questions below: 1. What technology do I use every day for both work and entertainment We all use devices for something in this day and age. And such devices are used for work, too. Go through what you know how to do. 2. Take inventory of things that others have said about you in the past What do my supervisors, friends, and co-workers say about my personality? Why do they enjoy working with me? 3. Take inventory of achievements in your previous career How did I succeed in my previous career? What licenses, degrees, and certifications have I worked towards? How have I contributed to companies in the past? All of the above may turn out to be a very long list. Yet, the longer the inventory list, the better. All skills and achievements earned throughout your career will somehow help you in the future. You may not know howyet, but they will. Understand what the top performers in your dream industry actually do The easiest way to get started doing this is to take courses held by business leaders in your desired industry. You need to discover exactly what is required for you to pursue your dream career and then spend day after day in this dream career. You are going to find out important things like the following: What the day to day work requires The people in the profession Length of workday Time commitment required to succeed If this dream profession is one you should do long-term or short-term On your journey of discovering âwhat is really requiredâ, you may find out that you simply do not like the work. When you apply for work in a new industry with no experience, you also have to display your understanding of the industry. In doing so, you may have companies overlook your lack of experience and see you as a person they can train. Highlight key relevant traits on your resume Take your inventory list and start to draw parallels between your newly desired career and your old one. For example, if you were once a lawyer and now wish to apply for an executive job, your intuition and presentation skills will serve you in both positions. There are always common threads between industries that serve a person. For example, a Military Police Officer who leaves the US Army and becomes a high school principal, or an Executive VP at an investment firm who decides to become a CPA.
