Reinvent Your Job Search the Jobs Way

Reinvent Your Job Search the Jobs WayReinvent Your Job Search the Jobs WaySteve Jobs 5 principles of job successAs I was researching the material for my new book, The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs (McGraw-Hill), I realized that many of the principles responsible for Jobs breakthrough success at Apple apply equally to the management of ones job search career. If you are searching for a new job in your field or pursuing a change in the schriftart of work you do, here are five principles to jump-start your career.1. Put a dent in the universe.Jobs never underestimated the power of einbildung to move a brand forward. Vision inspires new ideas and attracts evangelists. In 1976, Steve Wozniak was captivated by Jobs imagination to put a computer in the hands of everyday people. Wozniak was the engineering genius behind the Apple I and the Apple II, but it was Jobs vision that inspired Wozniak to focus his skills on building a computer for the masses. Jobs vision was intoxicating becaus e it had four components that all inspiring visions share It was bold, specific, concise and consistently communicated.Just as Jobs had a vision for his brand, you must have a vision for the most important brand of all - yourself. What vision do you have for your career? When I was a journalist for CNN, I knew that I wanted to start my own company. My vision for my brand could be summarized in one sentence the communications coach for the worlds most admired brands. I began adding that statement on my business cards before I even had a client I could call a most admired brand. Today my clients touch your life every day. Yes, you need to follow your passion, but while passion gives you energy, vision ultimately points you in the right direction. It will be easier to succeed in your next job, if it is one you are passionate about.2. Kick-start your brain.Jobs creative ideas have transformed elend one industry, but four - personal computers, music, entertainment and telecommunication s. Innovation requires creativity and creativity demands that you think differently aboutthe way you think. Scientists who study the way the brain works have discovered that innovators like Jobs employ a technique available to all of us - they seek out diverse experiences.Jobs creates new ideas precisely because he has spent a lifetime exploring new and unrelated things - seeking out diverse experiences. Jobs left the comfortable suburbs of Los Altos, California, to attend a liberal arts college in Oregon he studied the art of calligraphy in college (a study that found its way into the first Macintosh) meditated in an Indian ashram studied the fine details of a Mercedes-Benz and evaluated the Four Seasons hotel chain as he developed the customer service model for the Apple Stores. If your approach to the job search isnt yielding results, seek out diverse experiences attend meetings you wouldnt otherwise attend, network with people in other fields and explore new business ideas.3. Look outside your industry for career inspiration. In his insightful book, Iconoclast, Gregory Berns could have been writing about Jobs when he said, To see things differently than other people, the most effective solution is to bombard the brain with things it has never encountered before. Novelty releases the perceptual process from the shackles of past experiences and forces the brain to make new judgments. Bombard the brain with new experiences outside your comfort zone.4. Say no to 1,000 things.Jobs once said the secret to innovation comes from saying no to 1,000 things. Jobs is as proud of what Apple chooses not to do as he is about what Apple chooses to focus on. The lesson - dont spread yourself too thin. Find the job that intersects your passion, skill and the ability to make money doing it. Once you find it, focus on it, work at it and dedicate yourself to excellence in that area.5. Master presentation skills.Jobs is considered one of the greatest corporate storytellers i n the world. His presentations inform, educate and entertain. By giving extraordinary presentations, Jobs stands out as a leader. On the job search you are being judged to a large degree on your ability to communicate what you do. The big difference between great presenters and the average presenter is that great presenters use tools like PowerPoint to complement the message. The speaker is the storyteller PowerPoint slides serve as a backdrop to the story. That means you must learn to avoid bullet points and to think visually about bringing a story to life. When Jobs (who uses Apple Keynote software to design presentations) unveiled the MacBook Air in January 2008, instead of showing a slide with text and bullet points, he showed a slide of an interoffice manila envelope. He said the computer was so slim it would fit inside. Thats memorable and different. If your career requires excellent presentation skills, improve those skills by reading books such as The Presentation Secrets of Jobs, Slideology and Presentation Zen. You wont want to bring a slide projector into job interviews, but consider the language that you use and visuals you create when telling your story to others.Dont let bozos get you down. Many people around you think they know whats best for you. Only you can be true to your own heart and intuition. Jobs chose to drop out of college so he could drop in to the classes that really interested him, like calligraphy. The classes had no obvious practical application at the time but would eventually lead to world-changing products.Jobs knew that he had the skills to build a computer that would be simple enough for the average person to enjoy. Few others shared his vision. Ken Olsen, the founder of Digital Equipment, once told Jobs, There is no reason why anyone would want a computer in their home. Thank goodness Jobs didnt listen. If he had, millions of people would not be enjoying Macs, iPods, iPads and iPhones, which popularized touch-screen technolog y.Perhaps the greatest lesson Jobs teaches us is that risk-taking requires courage. Believe in yourself and your vision and be prepared to constantly defend those beliefs. Only then will innovation flourish and only then will you be able to find an insanely great job.

How to Set Your .NET Resume Apart

How to Set Your .NET Resume ApartHow to Set Your .NET Resume ApartIf youre writing your .NET resume, simply listing your proficiency with this framework may not be enough to convince a potential employer youre the right hire.Yes, .NET developers are in high demand. But that doesnt mean hiring managers arent picky about who they bring on board. So what other qualifications do you need for your resume to stand out? Here are five .NET development and front-end skills that can help you earn an interviewASP.NET MVC - This open source web application framework is emerging as an alternative to the traditional ASP.NET Web Forms as a development tool. The relatively quick enterprise shift to MVC for application building has stimulated demand for programmers with a command of both skills. The ASP.NET developer center is a good place to dive into MVC.Database programming - Database architects, programmers and administrators are in hot demand as the value of collecting and centrally managing in formation continues to rise. Database programming skills such as SQL Server and Oracle are becoming a must for a .NET resume. W3Schools offers myriad database tutorials that can help you gain knowledge or brush up on your skills.Familiarity with software and operating systems - Knowledge of a broad sortiment of software (such as Visual Basic, Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe) and operating systems demonstrates to employers that you can use your .NET skills for practical application.User interface (UI) design - Many candidates have the technical skills down, but few complement them with front-end finesse. Hitting both sides can be a major plus. Because the finished application design has to be intuitive and attractive to even novice users, employers frequently look for candidates who can develop applications that provide a compelling but natural user experience. Usability.gov bills itself as a one-stop shop for technology professionals who want to become proficient at UI and user e xperience (UX) design.Quality testing - Quality testing, including debugging, eliminating flaws and providing .NET application quality assurance, is another skill that can cause hiring managers to give extra attention to a .NET resume. Comprehensive testing of your application requires you to grasp and analyze all possible ways it could be used. To do this, you need to truly understand an organizations front-end objectives. If you want to explore issues and common enterprise needs in this area, Sticky Minds is a popular resource for quality testing and assurance professionals.By rounding out your skills, and creating a .NET resume that helps to underscore them, you can transform yourself from a strong to a standout candidate.Looking for a .NET job? Things to Do Before Leaving Your Summer Internship

Things to Do Before Leaving Your Summer InternshipThings to Do Before Leaving Your Summer InternshipMost interns are hired for a designated time period and both the employer and the intern are aware of when the internship will end. This fact makes it a little easier for interns to plan their exit strategy and check off the things that they want to get done before they leave their internship on a positive note. Dont be one of those interns that has forgotten what it was that they hoped to accomplish, even if the internship wasnt fully what you hoped it would be. 1. Maintain Your Professionalism You will want to maintain your reputation of being very professional from the first day you start to long after you leave the organization. This means maintaining your honesty and integrity and avoiding any negative communications in any of your correspondence. This is extremely important since one of the reasons to do an internship is to get a good reference and the only way to do that is to let teamberaters and co-workers know that you know proper workplace etiquette and understand what it takes to do a good job. 2. Schedule a Meeting With Your Supervisor and Hand in a Final Report of Your Accomplishments It is important to do this even if you are not asked to do so. Long after your internship is over you will want to have supervisors and co-workers think of you in a positive light. By taking the time to do a complete final report outlining your accomplishments, you will be letting your supervisor know exactly what youve been doing over the course of the last several months. Reports that add value to the future of the organization are especially helpful since it will show them that you were fully engaged in the mission of the organization and that you brought value to the department. A thorough report will also permit the organization to follow through on any projects that they might want to pursue once you have left the organization. Be sure to save examples of your work to share with potential employers down the road. 3. Update Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile Always keep your resume and LinkedIn profile up-to-date so that they are available at a minutes notice when applying for future internships or jobs. 4. Ask for Recommendations This can be a tough one for most students but professional recommendations on your LinkedIn site can pave the road to future internship or job offers. Nothing means more than having other individuals value your work. You may list past accomplishments in your resume and cover letter but having professionals attest to your knowledge, skills, and professional work ethic can make a huge difference when employers are considering your candidacy while still considering other applicants. You can also ask your immediate supervisor for a letter of recommendation to attest to your strong work ethic and ability to do a good job. 5. Create a Way to Keep in Touch With Supervisors and Co-Workers Long After Your I nternship Is Over Since building a professional network is one of the key things you wanted to accomplish at your internship, be sure to touch base with all supervisors and co-workers you worked closely with and share information on how you can keep in touch. Once your internship has ended you dont want the people you worked with for an entire semester or for the summer feel that youve fallen off the end of the earth. This is the way to make valuable connections for the future when you will be engaging in your job search after graduation. 6. Dont Forget to Leave Without Saying Thank You Be sure to take the time to thank everyone who helped to make your internship a success. Single out individuals that went out of their way to help you during the course of your internship, no matter how small a role that they played. Showing your appreciation will make those individuals that played a key role in your internship feel good about their contribution and they will remember you fondly long after youre gone.

3 Virtual Interview Responses That Are Deal Breakers

3 Virtual Interview Responses That Are Deal BreakersWithout a doubt, employees are a companys greatest resurce. If hiring professionals cant find the right people for the kollektiv, the company will fail. Unfortunately, many companies are having trouble landing candidates of a high caliber. In fact, our 2018 Growth Hiring Trends report found improving quality of hire was one of the top priorities for growing organizations. To increase the odds of hiring the best person for the job, you must weed out candidates who arent dedicated or a good fit. Then you can spend more time getting to know serious applicants. This is where virtual interviews come in. When used as an early candidate screen, virtual interviews reveal red flags about job seekers. But you have to know what types of answers are deal breakers. Here are three responses that should make you rethink a candidate1. I work better alone. Not everyone is a people person. But in every position, employees have to interact with other team members. Even for a remote job, a successful candidate has to communicate and problem-solve in the virtual work environment. If a job seeker isnt at least open to working with others, its a big red flag.Candidates who believe they are better on their own wont immerse themselves in the culture. This means they wont gain a true understanding of the organization or its values. Without this deeper connection to the company, the candidate wont have the motivation to contribute to the team or remain engaged at your organization.Candidates who think they work better alone also fail to understand the importance of feedback. Employees develop when their managers and peers share the strengths and weaknesses they see. When a person is constantly isolating themselves or working in a vacuum, they miss out on valuable learning opportunities.Theres no such thing as working better alone. Look for jobseekers who embrace teamwork.Click To Tweet2. My last boss was terrible.Few candidates are so unpro fessional they will flat out bad-mouth their former employer. But there are many variations on this answer that you need to look out for. Each one reveals something different about the candidate. For example, your virtual interviews may ask candidates to describe their last position. Its bedrngnis a good sign if their response is more focused on their bosss behavior than their own responsibilities. Aside from being unprofessional, it hints at a lack of self-awareness.Also, pay close attention to the tone candidates use when talking about their former employers. A phrase like he always challenged me has a completely different meaning if the candidate is being sarcastic or critical. Theres no one sitting in front of candidates during virtual interviews, so their guard could be down in regards to their body language. Pay close attention to whether their expression matches the words theyre saying.3. I dont know much about the company. The hiring process is a two-way street. Its about the candidate learning about your company just as much as it is about you assessing them. Its essential for both sides to decide if its a good fit. So if a candidate does not research your organization before a virtual interview, they arent very dedicated.Chances are your virtual interviews dont have a direct question that asks what do you know about our company? You look for more subtle signs that a candidate has done their due diligence. If a candidate is only using vague language when describing what they value in a job and workplace, theyre likely hiding their lack of knowledge about your company. They dont want to unknowingly say something that doesnt align with your organization.Likewise, be cautious with candidates who repeat your mission statement word for word. Instead of thoroughly researching your company and processing what they learned in their own way, they memorized keywords from your career page. When candidates say they dont know much about your organization, it reveals they wont be dedicated employees. hiringtipsClick To Tweet

Heres what a 52-week paid parental leave looks like

Heres what a 52-week paid parental leave looks likeHeres what a 52-week paid parental leave looks likeLeaders at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pushed for a policy that took their parental leave policy from 12 weeks to up to 52 weeks of paid time off, and it was approved in a matter of a few short weeks. Anyone on leave when the announcement was made, was eligible for the extended benefit, and those using or looking to utilize this policy are few people in the country with this kind of benefit. With the exception of Netflix, not many other companies offer workers (of all genders) a chance to take a full year off to be with their newborn babies.Thats largely because the United States is the only industrialized country that does not offer all citizens federally mandated paid family leave. Just 14% of civilian workers had access to paid leave last year, mostly thanks to state laws and progressive employers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Among 41 developed coun tries, the United States is the only one that does not have a federal law requiring paid leave for new parents, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reported. The law does allow workers to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave without risking losing their jobs after having a baby, but most developed countries offer an average of about one year of paid leave, according to Business Insider. In the absence of a federally mandated paid leave policy, some states and cities have implemented their own, while private and public companies also created their own policies. In fact, Fast Company has covered the rat race for organizations to one-up each other with extended benefits ranging from 12 weeks to six months, in an effort to retain and attract talent. But the Gates Foundation has raised the bar with a full paid year off for new parents. And, with more than two years of experience with the 52-week parental leave (and 222 new parents, 66% of whom are women and 34% of whom are men, participating out of a staff of 1,546), the Foundations chief human resources officer Steven Rice has said the policy cpistee was a wise move. He also explained how the Foundation is pulling it offQuantifying workManagers are now learning how to quantify the work that needs to get done, how to reset goals and expectations across the team, how to train a backfill individual thats going to be there for 12 to 18 months, Rice told Fast Company, since leadership has had to figure out how to get work done with key contributors out of the game for so long. We have toolkits. We do learning sessions and focus groups for the management team.Maintaining connectivityWeve had to be extremely prescriptive that the individual going on leave is the person who actually describes what connectivity looks like. Before someone goes out, we spend a lot of time with them, asking what good and bad connectivity looks like. We dont want to prescribe that it has be zero offline. We have a lot of typ e A personality folks here who want to stay connected.Through that conversation, were pushing a lot of their strongly held beliefs that they need to call in every month, or they need to be reviewing email, or still want to be in staff meetings. Ive had three individuals on my team say, I would like it if I can get a phone call with you for 30 minutes every three to four months, and I say, It needs to be what you view as being a positive connection back into the organization. Managing backfillsI never anticipated how we were going to manage backfills to replace employees on leave when we launched this program. We now have a website that shows all the opportunities popping up through the organization, and we now have people applying for these backfill positions as stretch opportunities for them to grow in their career and experiment and experience new parts of the organization that they wouldnt have experienced previously.Supporting fathers to take leave, tooMen who are in leadership roles feel a different type of stress or pressure on needing to want to take some time off but get back into the job. They probably hang onto the work much more strongly than a man in an individual contributor role. So were working on how can they actually delegate work and responsibilities, still feel supported, and feel that their re-entry would be managed.Reintroducing those whove taken leaveLike any dynamic organization, a year is a long time in terms of how many changes or shifts happen. So weve actually had managers do a new hire orientation to bring the individual back in. We werent anticipating the depth of how much that work was going to be for the manager. So those are the two areas that we underestimated, and probably where we still continue to do a lot of our work. This article first appeared on Fairygodboss.

When I hire someone, I am usually looking for an individual with a personality that will connect with our patient population and stakeholders. Most people have a lot of the same skill set these days. Employee accused of fatally poisoning 21 coworkers food

Employee accused of fatally poisoning 21 coworkers' food Employee accused of fatally poisoning 21 coworkers' food For most of us, our biggest office food horror are petty grievances like that colleague who keeps eating your sandwich. But a new case in Germany goes beyond someone stealing a condiment from the office fridge. According to ABC News, one employee is suspected of killing 21 of his colleagues by poisoning their lunches.Coworker suspected of poisoning colleague’s lunchesThe suspicion began when a 26-year-old employee noticed an unknown white powder on his sandwich and reported it to his manager. The company, a metal fitting firm, then installed a CCTV camera to monitor who was sprinkling powder on employee’s lunches. The camera allegedly revealed that a 56-year-old employee had been opening lunch boxes and dusting powder on them, police said. Lab results showed that the powder contained lead acetate, a toxin that could cause severe organ damage.“In the beginning, we thought it was a misconceived prank between co-workers, and not a murder attempt,” firm manager Tilo Blechinger to ld DPA, a German news agency. What would motivate someone to harm their coworkers like this? That is still being investigated. Identified only as “Klaus O” by police and described as “conspicuously inconspicuous” by his manager, the suspect had toxic chemicals like mercury, quicksilver, lead and cadmium in his home after police searched his apartment. The suspect was a longtime employee who had been at the company for 38 years, putting deaths that had occurred during those decades in a new sinister light. In total, police said they were looking into 21 cases of employees dying under suspicious circumstance since 2000.This is not the first time that an employee has used the seemingly innocent vessel of office food to act out their revenge on coworkers. Last month, a woman baked laxative-laced brownies for a coworker’s farewell party. However strict and secure your office environment is, every coworker needs to engage in the vulnerable act of eating food. Eating is where we p ut our guard down and trust that the food we put in our mouths is the food we packed for ourselves that morning. But sometimes. as these cases remind us, that trust can be fatally misplaced.

How to Find Work in an Industry With No Experience

How to Find Work in an Industry With No Experience How to Find Work in an Industry With No Experience You have been searching for a job for a while when suddenly one day you see a job that you have always wanted to try. It has been your dream job for years, but for some reason you never pursued it. The problem is, you have no work experience to get this new dream job. You can choose to give up or you can follow the recommendations shared below. It is true that you have no industry or work experience in this new dream job, today. Butjust like the career you now wish to leave, it takes time and commitment to learnnew skills. After all, you are coming into this new industry with no experience, competing against those who spent their careers in it. Knowing you have work to do is just the beginning Unfortunately, many people are conditioned to believe that “because they do not know something now” they will never be able to learn it. With the changing times and technology in today’s job market, it has become important for people to keep learning new skills, regardless of age or experience level. If you look at a dream job description and read something that makes you think, “I do not know how to do that”, you are discovering that you have something to learn. Go and take necessary classes to learn it before you apply for the job. Not only will you be happier that you did, but you will also get a liberating feeling that you are slowly escaping your old career, one class at a time. You may not be competitive today. But you are certainly on your way. Take a full inventory of everything you know how to do Skills never go to waste. Usually, people just fall out of practice and need to refresh their memory. Before thinking everything in your old career was a waste of time, take a full inventory of everything you know how to do. Here are some examples of how to take inventory using these steps and questions below: 1. What technology do I use every day for both work and entertainment We all use devices for something in this day and age. And such devices are used for work, too. Go through what you know how to do. 2. Take inventory of things that others have said about you in the past What do my supervisors, friends, and co-workers say about my personality? Why do they enjoy working with me? 3. Take inventory of achievements in your previous career How did I succeed in my previous career? What licenses, degrees, and certifications have I worked towards? How have I contributed to companies in the past? All of the above may turn out to be a very long list. Yet, the longer the inventory list, the better. All skills and achievements earned throughout your career will somehow help you in the future. You may not know howyet, but they will. Understand what the top performers in your dream industry actually do The easiest way to get started doing this is to take courses held by business leaders in your desired industry. You need to discover exactly what is required for you to pursue your dream career and then spend day after day in this dream career. You are going to find out important things like the following: What the day to day work requires The people in the profession Length of workday Time commitment required to succeed If this dream profession is one you should do long-term or short-term On your journey of discovering “what is really required”, you may find out that you simply do not like the work. When you apply for work in a new industry with no experience, you also have to display your understanding of the industry. In doing so, you may have companies overlook your lack of experience and see you as a person they can train. Highlight key relevant traits on your resume Take your inventory list and start to draw parallels between your newly desired career and your old one. For example, if you were once a lawyer and now wish to apply for an executive job, your intuition and presentation skills will serve you in both positions. There are always common threads between industries that serve a person. For example, a Military Police Officer who leaves the US Army and becomes a high school principal, or an Executive VP at an investment firm who decides to become a CPA. Many skills you have may need tweaking, but they just might be transferable. Never dismiss those unspoken skills. Just because they do not directly apply for the job at hand, does not make them useless. These are things like personality traits and interpersonal or entertainment and athletic skills. These are the types of skills that may serve a person when least expected. When you are missing key skills Focus on plugging up all the holes in your resume. There’s a big difference between, “I don’t have a degree in the desired field” vs. “It says Advanced Mathematics Degree required.” If you know you need an advanced degree, this will be more time to invest in your career change. When you have plugged up holes in your resume for the dream job you want, you will find applying to jobs in a new field to be like starting over. You may take some ground-floor positions, but it will certainly be worth it. You may even find yourself many steps ahead of those who in your dream career who claim to have experience. Everyone loves a fresh and new appreciative face on the block who truly wants to be in a career and does not feel like it is owed to them because of previous experiences. Good luck!

Tailoring Your Resume According To Job Offer

Tailoring Your Resume According To Job Offer Tailoring Your Resume According To Job Offer Applying for a job? You’ve probably heard the advice plenty of times to tailor your resume for the position because it makes your resume to stand out from the numerous resumes already present with the recruiter by giving it a personal touch. But, you might not know exactly how to put it into action. What does tailoring your resume actually involve? How many changes do you need to make? What content should you be focusing on? Although it might sound like a lot of work, but it’s really quite manageable. Here are a few ideas to get you started. Actually, Read and Try to Understand the Job You’re Applying For Most candidates will see a job title they like, skim through the requirements and excitedly send their resume over without even double-checking their resume to make sure they have highlighted all the relevant experience. So, do first things first: Sit down with a highlighter and really read the job description. Go through and highlight the points that seem important (not only the ones that are mentioned repeatedly but also anything that’s slightly out of the ordinary) and the points that you could speak to with your experience and skills. This is always the step one for the reason that you need to think from the perspective of the recruiter. Choose the Right Keywords   Choosing and adding the right keywords is crucial in the process of tailoring your resume. Any time you see repeated phrases or keywords across offers and profiles, there is a good chance that it is a skill that the hiring manager will find indispensable. Another good way to think of skills is to divide them up into three categories: Job-related Skills:   You have to have these skills to do the job. Example: Operating a particular piece of machinery. Transferable Skills: These are skills that you can use in lots of different work environments. Example: Your ability to use Microsoft Office. Adaptive Skills:  These are the survival skills that you develop to enhance basic human interactions in everyday life. Example: Mediation But keep in mind that the hiring manager doesn’t expect you to have every single skill listed in the job description. Demonstrate how you’ve used these skills before in past jobs Not only identifying your skills is important, but also you should know how to list them in your resume. for example, instead of writing: “Management Skills.”    Write: “Management of Large Teams (100+ people)” or  Managed a team of more than 100 people capable of delivering projects with significant cost savings of up to 10% per project. It has the added benefit of allowing the recruiter to imagine you achieving the same results for them. Make Your First Point Immediately Relevant The first role on your CV is very important because it’s the first example of your work that recruiters will see, so they place a great deal of value on it. Take your resume, find the experience that would make recruiter most excited about your application, and rework the document so that’s what’s at the top. Maybe it’s your current position, or maybe it’s some specialized certifications or the freelance work you do on the side. Whatever it is, make it the first section of your resume. And yes, even if it’s not the most recent. There’s no rule that says your first section must be “Work Experience.” Tailoring your resume means finding what is most relevant, creating a section for it, and filling it up with experience or qualifications that will catch a hiring manager’s eye. If that means mixing “Work Experience,” creating a “Marketing and Social Media Experience” section, then throwing everything else in an “Additional Experience” section, then so be it. Use Bullets Even for Less Relevant Experiences Try using numbers and achievements to illustrate your use of these skills. Adding numbers will also make it easier for the recruiter to locate them in your resume. From the job description, you’ll likely find more than just the technical qualifications needed to complete the job. Strong communication skills, ability to work in a team and other soft skills are probably listed as well. So, while your tutoring experience might not be directly related to the sales position you’re interested in, you can definitely still highlight some of the soft skills that both positions require. And by doing so using bullets will have a more positive impact. Add a Spotlighting Effect With Numbers and Details Using numbers and details in various sections can definitely help you to get the attention of the hirer. For example, If the job description asks for someone with “account management” skills, don’t just list “account management” in a bullet list. It tells the employer nothing. Instead, use    Managed 27 accounts that generated $1.2 million in revenue  in the 2015 fiscal year.  Closed 3 new accounts,  resulting in  $400,000 of new business. It tells the employer: How many accounts did you manage? (27). The financial data/ information related to account management. Be discreet. Don’t share sensitive financial information if you’re not authorized to do so. That you have the ability to bring in new business â€" something that every business wants an account manager to do. Now, after taking care of about points to make your personalized tailored resume that is more appropriate for the job offer you need to, Make Sure You’ve Done a Good Job Once you’ve finished tailoring your resume to the job description, you can see how well they match by dropping your resume into a cloud generator. By using a cloud generator, you will be able to see which words are most prominent in your resume. If the words that appear are not skills or are not words you want to be remembered by, you should tweak your resume so that you use important words more often. You can use  Jobscan’s online resume analysis tool  to make sure all of your keywords are optimized for the job description. The tool allows you to drop both your job description and your tailored resume into an ATS simulator that compares the two documents. It will tell you how much your resume matches the job offer (80% or better is ideal). Even if your resume isn’t going to be scanned via ATS, using a site like Jobscan will at least give you an idea of how well you’ve tailored your resume to match the job description. Tailoring your resume does take time and diligence. So many minor changes can frustrate a job seeker. But minor changes can have major benefits. It can also show the recruiter in six seconds or less that your resume is relevant and in the right place. So, don’t miss out on an opportunity to give hiring managers exactly what they want. This is the best workout for your personality type

This is the best workout for your personality type This is the best workout for your personality type As we navigate the treacherous, dark depths of winter, getting sick is a concern for just about everyone. And with a plethora of trendy diets and food-dedicated Instagram accounts at our fingertips, it’s easy to overthink our food choices for the wrong reasons. When we get sick, the most important thing to do is nourish our bodies to rebuild our immune systems. However, depending on what sickness you have, there are specific foods you should and shouldn’t eat. So here’s a simple, no-BS guide to the best foods to eat when you’re feeling under the weather and why they work so well.By now, most of us are aware of the great benefits that come with regular exercise.  Working out on the reg  can boost your mood, help you maintain a healthy weight, strengthen your bones and even keep your brain sharper. Even knowing  these benefits, the biggest challenge of all is finding a workout that you’re actually going to stick with. Not all workouts are fit for every individual, and when it comes to maintaining a regular training routine and staying motivated, it’s crucial to pick a type of exercise that you actually enjoy. Some swear by fast-paced spin classes where the instructor screams at you at the top of her lungs. Others recoil at the thought of this type of workout, and would rather opt for a tranquil, dim-lit yoga class. To help you find a workout that you’ll enjoy and actually do, we decided to roundup workouts that suit these eight popular personality types the best. Which personality type are you?For The Extreme Introvert: A Solo RunIf you’re a person who recoils at the thought of sweating it out with a group of other humans, you might want to stick to solo workouts and stay away from group  fitness. For the individual who wants to avoid small talk at all costs, we recommend running as your workout of choice. Just think about it, all you need to do is stick in your headphones and hop on a treadmill or start on your favorite trail, and you won’t have to deal with interacting with anyone for the rest of your workout. Bonus: Travel a little further for your run to  one of these beautifully secluded running routes  where you might not see another person for miles. For The Social Butterfly: A Zumba ClassWhen you’re at the gym, most of your time is spent talking to other gym-goers rather than exercising. If chatting up strangers and making new friends is what you live for, we think that Zumba will be your new favorite workout. This aerobic dance class will make you feel like you’re attending one giant party. Zumba will allow you  to socialize  while actually doing something good for your body, instead of prepping yourself for a massive hangover. For The Highly Competitive Type: CrossFitDo your friends refuse to play board games with you because of how competitive you get? If you’re the Monica of your friend group (read: highly competitive) then we recommend an intense, numbers-based workout like CrossFit. Regular CrossFit-goers s ay that it’s not unusual to throw up after your first time doing the workout. If this doesn’t intimidate you, you’ll feel right at home.Although  CrossFit has a great community  and you’ll probably make a lot of friends there, when class starts people are not there to chit-chat, they’re there  to put in work. Throughout the duration of the workout class, you’ll be competing with fellow gym-goers to see who can do the most repetitions for a certain exercise, like pushups, in the least amount of time. Most people would hate this concept, but if you’re highly competitive, chances are that you’ll thrive in this type of environment. For The Adventurous One: A Breath-Taking HikeIf you’re a self-proclaimed adventure-junky, you might not like the idea of joining a gym and spending so much time indoors, especially when the weather’s nice. But just because you don’t like the thought of going to a fitness facility to do your workouts, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn†™t exercise at all. For the explorer at heart, we recommended hiking as the best means of exercise. Break a sweat while  taking in the most beautiful views  and exploring a new land. You’ll be so busy checking out the scenery that you won’t even feel like you’re exercising. For The One With Pent-Up Anger: A Boxing ClassEverything and everyone gets on your nerves, and it doesn’t take much to set you off on a rant.  If you’re a naturally tense person, or if you’re just experiencing a period of extra pent-up frustration, taking regular boxing classes might be just what you need to feel a little more zen. Boxing will allow you to sweat out all of your frustrations while simultaneously getting in a great workout.  This type of exercise  is optimal for both building strength and improving your cardiovascular fitness. For The Energizer  Bunny: A Spin ClassYou’re extremely hyperactive and  just can’t sit still. It’s not uncommon for people to refer to you as the “energizer bunny.” If this sounds like you, then your ideal workout is a fast-paced spin class. One of the goals of spin is to keep your legs moving at all times, usually for 45 minutes to an hour. In many spin classes, the faster you peddle, the better. If you’re looking for a place to direct all of your extra energy, taking a spin class is a good (and healthy) way to get rid of it.For The Perpetually Indecisive One: Boot Camp ClassIf your biggest barrier to maintaining a regular exercise routine is not being able to decide what workout to do, taking Boot Camp classes could be the answer to your problem. Boot Camp combines strength and cardio exercises so that you won’t have to choose between the two on any given day. To keep your muscles guessing, every Boot Camp class incorporates different exercises even at the same studio. Unlike CrossFit, in Boot Camp it’s very unlikely that you’ll be asked to lift some insane amount of weight, you’ll most likely be given a range of weight t o lift and then you can pick whatever weight you’re comfortable with.  Barry’s Bootcamp  is one of the most popular Boot Camp classes enjoyed by beginners and advanced fitness-goers alike. For The Hard-Core Exercise-Hater: Intramural Sportsho says that you need to hit the gym to keep active? If you’re one of those people who hates exercise more than anything else, consider joining an intramural sports league like soccer or softball. Chances are that if you live in a decent-sized city, you’ll have access to many different types of recreational sports leagues. You can choose to be part of one of that takes itself very seriously or one that people just join to be social and stay active. Intramural sports leagues for adults are also a great way for you to meet new people and make friends with like-minded individuals. The best part of this type of physical activity? You’ll be having so much fun playing the sport that you won’t even realize that it’s exercise. This article was originally published on Swirled.

How to Get Ahead at Work Without Becoming a Workaholic

How to Get Ahead at Work Without Becoming a Workaholic How to Get Ahead at Work Without Becoming a Workaholic I watched Wolf of Wall Street recently, which inspired several flashbacks to my days in finance, working in the pit for a large bank. Seeing those crowded trading desks and excited sales traders reminded me how hard most of those people worked to try to get ahead. Probably too hard. While I’m sure many firms dealing on Wall Street did their fair share of after-hours partying, I never saw it. Mostly because it seemed that hardly anyone ever left the office long enough to get up to much mischief. The first people in the office were almost always among the last to leave, and I remember witnessing more than a few contrite phone calls to spouses and loved ones, as my co-workers canceled on yet another dinner, birthday party, or family vacation. Sure, there was probably a lot of money on the table, but was working 18-hour days really the way to success? Fortunately, I have also worked with a few successful people throughout my career who managed to keep climbing the corporate ladder without stomping all over their personal lives in the process. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned from them over the years on how to achieve success at work- without selling your soul. Lesson #1: Gain a Loyal Following Having co-workers, employees, or team members you can turn to at work is great for a lot of reasons- but it’s also an ideal strategy for helping you accomplish more than you ever thought possible. Take one of my old bosses, for example. She had worked for the firm for over a decade and knew everyone’s job inside and out. She was a great mentor and easy to work with, and she always came to bat for us when we needed her. As a result, the team was fiercely loyal to her. If one of us saw her staying late, we’d ask her how we could help, so she could go home. If she had to give a presentation or leave town for a conference, a handful of us would jump to help her prepare or cover her workload while she was out. The team was so loyal to her that she rarely had to ask us to do anything- we almost always offered first. As a result, we were one of the most efficient, successful teams in our division, and no one had any doubt it was due, in large part, to our fearless leader. Having loyal employees who will go above and beyond to help you is something you couldn’t achieve on your own, no matter how many nights and weekends you worked. Yes, you’ll have to put in some extra hours and effort up front, but once you’ve proven yourself to your team, their loyalty will already begin to pay dividends. Lesson #2: Outsource This concept is nothing new, but for those of us with specific ideas on how a job should be approached, it’s a difficult one to put into practice. But, ignore the benefit of outsourcing (or delegating) and you’ll quickly find yourself burning the midnight oil. Take my boss, a few years back, as a cautionary example. He was a perfectionist and had high standards for the work our team produced. Those high standards naturally rubbed off on the rest of the team, and before long, we were fully capable of performing all our duties to the highest standard. Unfortunately, our boss had a difficult time letting go and would often micromanage us so severely that he eventually just took over our projects himself. By the time he was finished, he was behind on his own work. Thankfully, my boss eventually realized he had to start letting go. He started out by delegating the tasks he knew he couldn’t finish, and before long, he was comfortable outsourcing larger projects. Once the work was more evenly distributed, he was happier at work- and finally had the time to actually manage the team. If you’re starting feel like your work is taking over your entire life, it’s probably time to start thinking about outsourcing some of your responsibilities. Start with smaller tasks, and gradually add more responsibility as you become comfortable with the results. Just make sure you don’t micromanage the process, and before you know it, you’ll have more time to focus on your professional growth- and, you’ll be a lot happier at work. Lesson #3: Make a To-Do and a Done List I’ve always been a big fan of lists, and they’re an especially important ingredient for attaining workplace success while minimizing your workload. Not only do lists help you keep track of what you need to accomplish, but they’re also a great historical record of what you’ve achieved. I’ll never forget a conversation I was having with a boss years ago, when he admitted he didn’t really know what I did on a daily basis. I politely excused myself and ran to my desk and grabbed my trusty notebook. When I returned, we sat down, and I flipped through over a year’s worth of daily lists, detailing everything from large, long-term projects to daily deadlines. He was impressed with how much more I was doing, and when our year-end comp discussion rolled around a few months later, I had no objections to the raise I had asked for. Lists will keep you organized and on track when you’re overloaded with work, but more importantly, they’ll serve as a historical record of how awesome you are. And when you can point to a list that shows exactly what you’ve accomplished- well, then you’ll have to worry less about making sure your boss knows you’re clocking 12 hours each day. Lesson #4: Redefine “Success” One of the saddest sights I’ve seen in my career is of an executive holed up in her office late at night on a Friday before a long weekend. There was no doubt she’d become a massive success at work- but, well, that was about it. She worked tirelessly and never allowed herself any time for fun or relaxation. As a result, she was perpetually tired, and as far as the rest of the team could tell, she no longer loved the job she’d sacrificed so much for. On the flip side, there was her colleague we’ll call Betty. Betty was just as successful, however, she made a point to create and uphold strict work-life boundaries. During working hours, Betty was a machine. But, when quitting time rolled around, she was out the door and never looked back. Management respected her efficiency, her team loved working for her, and her family still recognized her face. In my book? Betty got it right. You probably can’t enjoy your job if you’re overworked and exhausted- and the more you enjoy your work, the better you’ll be at your job. If you set boundaries, have a life outside of work, and take time to recharge whenever you can, you’ll likely find you’re much more productive- and successful- from 9 to 5. Success comes at a price, there’s no doubt about it. But, how you pay that price is up to you. Follow these tips, and you’ll find success is well within your reach, and you’ll still have the health and energy to enjoy the fruits of your labors. Better Ways to Get Career Advice - The Muse

Better Ways to Get Career Advice - The Muse Better Ways to Get Career Advice Trust me, I know it’s hard to know where to turn for career advice that’s actually helpful. Emphasis on “actually helpful.” After all, almost everyone (and literally their mom) is willing to give it to you. But, finding words of wisdom that’ll actually you get you closer to your career goal always feels harder than it should be. Even though I’ve coached job seekers for years and am now that voice for many people, I’m no different than you. I’ve asked for help with my career plenty of times- from friends, family, coaches, colleagues, you name it. Most of what I got in return was a combination of cliche or unhelpful. However it wasn’t all a wash. Over the years, I’ve learned that if you want to get awesome advice, you need to use five simple techniques. 1. Skip Your Best Friend- and Ask Your Most Successful Connection, Instead Yes, going to your best friend’s your typical default when you’re trying to get honest feedback. Not only is it easy, but you trust him or her to be completely honest with you. Also, sending a text sure is more convenient than figuring out how to word an email to someone you have drinks with every few months. However, when it comes to your career, honesty’s not always enough. Instead, you want to go to the friend who has the career you want. This doesn’t mean that she’s a step ahead of you on the ladder in your field- but rather that you both define success similarly, and she’s well on her way to getting there. Bill Sullivan, founder of The Tyche Project, lays out why this is a better move: “This [person] generally shows an ability to look deeper into challenges and come up with viable solutions based on experience and opinion.” Emphasis on experience- sometimes you have to be on the same road to know which way to go. 2. Ask the (Old) Boss While it sometimes makes sense to ask your current manager for advice, Tami Reiss, co-creator of the JustNotSorry app, suggests not go to him or her until you’ve looked for advice elsewhere: “If it was work-related, I learned not to go to my boss until I had a few options on what to do; bosses need to have confidence in employees’ abilities to solve problems.” So, who better to turn to in order to get those options than your former boss. After all, this person doesn’t have a vested interest in how you’re performing in your current job. At the same time, if you had a great relationship with him or her, he or she’ll want to help you continue to do well. Most importantly, he or she know what makes you tick (and what ticks you off). By taking this step first, you’re not jeopardizing your credibility when you do ask your current manager for help; rather you’re showing that you’ve done all the legwork possible. Now you’re coming to him or her with potential solutions, rather than just a host of problems. 3. Find a Mentor Instead of turning to someone close to you personally or professionally, COO Brian Delle Donne points out that it might be best to turn to a mentor who is an “unbiased individual…that wants to see you succeed and is in a position to provide strategic advice to that end.” A mentor-mentee relationship’s generally low-risk because this person has nothing to personally gain besides a sense of satisfaction when you become successful. That’s exactly why mentors go out of their way to help you. Even better, this relationship can begin to feel more like a friendship as you know each other longer. Don’t underestimate the benefits of getting close to someone older, wiser, and more experienced than you. 4. Take Your Parents With a Grain of Salt If you’re looking for general life advice, your parents probably have some that’s timeless. However if you’re seeking out help with an industry-specific problem, it’s best to steer clear. They might have your best interests in mind, but they unfortunately probably don’t completely get what you do, nor the options available to you. Also, keep in mind that parents subconsciously might be reliving their glory days (or lack thereof) through your career. As Aaron Hurst, an economist and entrepreneur, says: “Projecting of one’s self is most pronounced in relationships between parents and their children.” So, just something to keep in mind when you’re deciding what parental tidbits to follow and what to just smile politely about (and laugh about to your friends later). 5. Be Open to Tough Love There are lots of different kinds of advice you can get- but often times, the best kind is the honest, tough love that opens up your eyes to the big picture (or, in some cases, the realistic picture). One way to get this? Hiring a career coach who doesn’t owe you anything but honesty. Joe Lyons, a successful sales VP at a storage startup, explains: “The career coach for me is unfiltered, raw, and unafraid to offend. I call it career-course-correction through advanced thinking.” Like Joe, I’ve worked with a coach, too. Throughout the sessions, he was able to identify my biases and patterns, call me out on them, and then help me develop solutions for breaking through them. Sure, the truth hurt on occasion. But it also set me free. At the End of the Day, You Need to Make the Call One mistake I’ve made and have seen others make is to grab hold of the most recent piece of advice, and then run with it. A better approach is to wait until you’ve gathered input from all sources, let things sit for a day or two, and then evaluate everything again. You’ll almost certainly make a better decision, and you won’t overweigh the feedback that’s most fresh in your mind. Steve Kaplan, a business development executive at a pre-IPO company, sums it up beautifully: “I believe that, in general, the more feedback the better. But at the end of the day, we are responsible for whatever action we take, not our advisers.” Choose wisely!
